Ladywood Job Club

The Ladywood area in Birmingham suffers some of the most entrenched poverty, deprivation and highest levels of unemployment in the UK

Suited for Success is based in the Ladywood constituency in the inner city of Birmingham.

Birmingham׳s unemployment rate is the highest of the Uk core cities - significantly above the core city average. The Ladywood area of Birmingham suffers some of the most entrenched poverty and deprivation and the highest levels of unemployment in the UK.

Barriers to employment

Many people in the area are dealing with a complex of needs that are barriers to employment including lack of digital and work skills, language barriers, mental health issues, addiction recovery, criminal records and risk of homelessness. High levels of child poverty can also be directly linked to high unemployment in the area.

With the introduction of Universal Credit issues of worklessness and poverty in Ladywood is becoming even more entrenched. However, despite the high unemployment figures there is very limited, resources and opportunities in Ladywood to support the unemployed especially women with children.

The Ladywood Job Club

Since September 2017 Suited for Success has been working in partnership with local charity Karis Neighbour Scheme, community projects and churches in Ladywood to run a Job Club in the heart of the community. The job club creates a supportive central hub where local people, local job centres, charities, community projects, frontline support agencies and local employers can work together to support the unemployed in the area.

We offer one-to-one support with CVs, job applications forms, job searches and training opportunities. Many people in Ladywood struggle with IT skills, lack of work experience, language barriers and finding part-time work to fit around having young children and large families.

Ladywood is also a very culturally diverse community with a high proportion of people from ethnic backgrounds with many from Muslim, African-Caribbean, Asian and new community backgrounds with English being their second language.

The Job Club is based in central Ladywood: at:

Ladywood Community Centre,

St Vincent Street West

Birmingham

B16 8RP

Runs every Wednesday morning between 10am - 1pm alongside a money advice service and a Real Junk Food Cafe.

Local jobs for local people

Exciting major regeneration is happening in and around the area including a new leisure centre the new Metropolitan hospital, Icknield port loop and HS2 Curzon Street station. Unemployed people across Ladywood are missing out on the available opportunities because of barriers to employment.

Suited for Success is onsite in the Digital Den at the Ladywood Community Centre every Wednesday morning helping people with CVs, application forms, job search and interview preparation skills. Our aspiration is to work together with others and help make a difference to unemployment right on our doorstep and in the heart of our city.
