Landing a dream job with the Commonwealth Games

As the city puts the final preparations in place for the Commonwealth Games in just a few weeks we are reflecting on a very busy 12 months supporting people in Birmingham to take up the 1000s of job opportunities available.

From job fairs, community events, presentations and employment days working together with job centres, Birmingham City Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority Jobs and Skills Academy.

A dream job

We’re over the moon and so excited for our client Shevonne who’s landed a job role at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with the official media broadcaster for the Games Sunset +Vine.

After graduating with a law degree in 2017, Shevonne worked for a Birmingham law firm as a receptionist/administrator for two years, before being made redundant during the covid pandemic. Keen to get back into employment Shevonne signed up to work with Suited for Success on a lottery funded partnership employment programme with the West Midlands Combined Authority called Stand Out, supporting young people aged 18-30 into volunteering, training and employment within the Commonwealth Games.

Industry level skills training

Shevonne expressed an interest in changing her career path and moving into media. Suited for Success supported her to enrol on a Sunset+Vine training bootcamp where young trainees received industry-level skills training across a variety of disciplines including live TV, broadcasting and production. The initiative also offered the opportunity to work within the host broadcast team in a professional (paid) capacity at the Commonwealth Games Once in a lifetime opportunity

This was not only a perfect step in the direction of Shevonne’s dream career, she also has the exciting once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the biggest event ever to take place in the West Midlands.

“I’m looking forward to being surrounded by the sheer rush and excitement of the Games and working with the production team” says Shevonne. “Working alongside Sunset + Vine is a great opportunity and I will relish every moment”.

Not just a summer job

A big recruitment drive for over 20,000 Commonwealth Games jobs available with contractors was launched earlier this year in February. Jobs included security, stewarding, catering, cleaning, retail and logistics and many more opportunities to help the Games run smoothly.

United by Birmingham 2022

Suited for Success is also a United by Birmingham community partner. Our charity will be helping to ensure the legacy of B2022 doesn’t stop when the Games does. After all the excitement dies down, Suited for Success will be focused on supporting people who were employed during Games to find new employment.
