Hong Kong Day at PwC

On Wednesday 17th January we had a Engage employment day in partnership with PwC UK and the RMC: THE REFUGEE AND MIGRANT CENTRE to host a Hong Kong day at the PwC Birmingham office.

Led by the PwC recruitment team, the day supported a group of 27 job seekers from Hong Kong who have moved to the UK over the last two years through the British National (Overseas) visa (known as a BNO visa). All are ‘highly’ qualified with many years of experience in business finance (many in senior positions) including accounting, banking, auditing, tax and compliance; however are struggling to gain work in the UK in their professional fields having to do warehouse packing and other entry level jobs.

UK workplace culture

A panel of PwC staff, all from Hong Kong, shared their own personal stories and experiences on moving to the UK, finding employment and now working at PwC UK with job roles ranging from tax compliance, financial services consulting and business solutions. Great practical tips and advice from the panel included job searching, selling yourself at interviews, dealing with rejection and getting references; also a great discussion about workplace cultural in the UK and differences to Hong Kong culture.

The PwC recruitment team also covered their recruitment process, applying for jobs, CV tips and practicing interviews questions. Attendees also received 1-2-1 coaching from a team of PwC staff members from across the office looking at CVs and practicing interview questions.

PwC Midlands Regional Leader David Morris also popped in to say hello and gave a few words of encouragement and inspiration.

I'm not fighting alone...

One attendee said: “Thank you so much for putting on this day for us. It’s been fantastic to receive all the useful tips and advice from the PwC team and Hong Kong people already working in the UK in my career profession, it's been invaluable. I now feel that I’m not fighting alone, to keep going and not giving up”.

We already have a waiting list of over 60 people for another day who also registered to attend.

Such an AMAZING day!!! Thank you so much PwC UK.

Also a HUGE thank you to our financial supporters, without crucial financial support we really couldn't organise days like this.
